About

Volvo is one of the most well-known and respected premium car brands in the world and the company aims to provide its customers with the Freedom to Move in a personal, sustainable, and safe way. Volvo Cars manufactures and markets sport utility vehicles, station wagons, sedans, compact executive sedans, and coupes. With approximately 2,300 local dealers from around 100 national sales companies worldwide, Volvo Cars’ largest markets are China, the United States, Sweden, and the other countries in the European Union.

The Challenge: Juggling siloed information across multiple systems meant inaccuracies regarding employee health

Volvo was using five separate systems (including time-keeping, SAP, and HCM) to manage its Global Rehabilitation and Return to Work program, which was becoming exceedingly complex and time-consuming to manage as the company continues to grow.

Each manager at Volvo is directly responsible for overseeing the case management and end-toend return to work process for all their direct reports. However, with each manager having many direct reports (sometimes between 50 and 60), tracking and managing everything from medical documentation to workers’ compensation, to notifications to other groups in the organization, quickly became unsustainable to keep up with across multiple systems. Volvo Cars realized it needed a more efficient way to manage its Return to Work program and partnered with Cority to harmonize complex workflows and consolidate across a single, unified platform.

The Solution: A unified, single source of truth for employee health

Volvo Cars found a willing co-innovation partner in Cority. The two companies worked together to build a solution using the Cority product. Volvo Cars kicked off the digital transformation of its Return to Work program with a pilot program in July 2017 at one plant in Sweden.

Using Cority, Volvo Cars now has a more streamlined and efficient process for managing its Rehabilitation and Return to Work program. Instead of juggling siloed information across multiple systems as they previously were, managers now have a single source of truth for employee health. Managers currently use Cority for end-to-end return to work management including case management, storing medical certificates, and automatic notification and task creation to track employee rehabilitation.

After a successful pilot program, Volvo then began its revamped Return to Work program globally in February 2019 to 3500 Case Managers, with the goal to deploy the application to its 35,000 employees. Volvo now has a modern, intuitive and GDPR compliant system to capture, track, and report on employee health, case management, and workers’ compensation data.

The Results: Strong, reliable and scalable reporting and analytics for the employee Return to Work program

Volvo was able to realize operational efficiencies by replacing multiple isolated systems with a single solution that provides administrators and managers with strong, reliable and scalable reporting and analytics for its employee Return to Work program. Volvo can now easily run a report to see how many employees across different regions are out on sick leave, making resource planning and staffing easier and more efficient. Cority was designed to adhere with GDPR requirements and ensure Volvo remains in compliance with EU regulations.

With a robust training program, Volvo has realized high user adoption of the Cority platform. Over 3500 managers are now using the core Cority platform to manage global Rehabilitation and Return to Work operations.
