About the OH&S New Product of the Year Awards

Since 2009, Occupational Health & Safety Magazine has hosted its prestigious awards program to spotlight innovations that help employers create safer, healthier work environments. Entries are judged by independent EHS experts across categories like industrial hygiene, PPE, training, risk management, and more. Winning solutions must deliver measurable impact, usability, and innovation — values that are foundational to Cority’s mission.

What is SIF Essentials — and Why Does it Matter?

SIF Essentials is a purpose-built, configurable software package that helps organizations more effectively identify, assess, and mitigate the potential for serious injuries and fatalities in the workplace. It was designed to rapidly operationalize SIF prevention principles — integrating research-backed models, in-field validation tools, and out-of-the-box dashboards that make adoption fast and insight immediate.

Who uses it?

  • EHS professionals, safety managers, and operational risk leaders
  • Organizations in high-risk industries like manufacturing, energy, transportation, and construction
  • Teams seeking to move beyond general incident tracking to prioritize high-severity risk scenarios

Q&A with Farzhana Shah – SIF Essentials Product Manager

What’s your favorite feature in SIF Essentials — the thing you’re most proud of?

The safety of employees is paramount, and SIF Essentials is revolutionizing how organizations approach risk management. One of the standout features of SIF Essentials that I’m particularly proud of is its capability to conduct in-field critical controls validations. This feature marks a significant shift in how we think about safety, moving from a purely preventive mindset to a more holistic approach that recognizes the reality of workplace failures.

Historically, many safety controls focused on preventing failures altogether, operating under the assumption that all failures or errors could be avoided. However, the truth is that failures will inevitably occur. Accepting this fact is vital for effective worker protection because it allows organizations to prepare appropriately.

The SIF Essentials in-field controls validation feature helps shift the narrative by emphasizing the importance of mitigative controls, which are essential to significantly reducing the impact of unwanted events when they happen. Organizations can easily evaluate how well they are managing high-energy risks, providing immediate insight into which areas require additional attention to minimize serious incident frequency. The integration of data visibility tools facilitates risk prioritization, empowering organizations to not just prevent injuries but to also ensure that they can “fail safely” should the unexpected occur.

What kind of real-world impact do you see this having for clients?

The impact of implementing SIF Essentials is profound. At its core, this program is designed to prevent serious injuries and fatalities.  Current data shows that global fatality rates have plateaued, underscoring the urgent need for new strategies to ensure our workers return home safely each day. By utilizing the tools and comprehensive insights provided by SIF Essentials, organizations can take proactive steps to protect their workforce from serious hazards that can cause fatalities. It’s not just about compliance; it’s about creating a culture of safety that prioritizes people above all else.

What SIF Essentials Solves

Too often, companies struggle to answer a deceptively simple question: Where is our next serious injury most likely to occur — and what are we doing to stop it?

Many rely on outdated or subjective tools to assess SIF potential. Some have no structured SIF prevention process at all. The result is inconsistent classification, reactive decision-making, and missed opportunities to prevent life-altering events.

SIF Essentials addresses these challenges head-on:

  • Standardizes SIF classification with research-backed models (EEI’s SCL and HECA)
  • Integrates seamlessly with Cority’s Safety Essentials for end-to-end risk workflows
  • Equips teams with real-time data visibility to identify patterns and act proactively
  • Enables in-field validation of critical controls tied to high-energy hazards
  • Reduces implementation timelines from months to weeks

Why Now? What Drove This Innovation

Serious injuries and fatalities remain stubbornly persistent, even as recordable incidents decline. At Cority, we recognized a growing demand from our clients for tools that would move beyond basic safety compliance to strategic prevention.

This award validates what Cority clients have been experiencing since SIF Essentials launched:

  • Faster adoption
  • Better decision-making
  • More effective risk mitigation

It’s not just about ticking a compliance box — it’s about saving lives by helping organizations focus on what matters most.
